Preventing Shipping Container Condensation

People sometimes ring us convinced their container leaks, when in fact it is bone dry from the outside and raining on the inside. Container rain is condensation, and it is straightforward to design out.

What is actually happening

A container is a sealed steel box. Steel changes temperature quickly, so on a clear night the roof and walls drop below the temperature of the air inside. Any moisture carried in that air condenses on the cold steel, collects on the underside of the roof and eventually drips onto whatever is stored below. It looks exactly like a leak.

The moisture has to come from somewhere: damp ground underneath, wet or freshly washed items, cardboard, timber, garden equipment, grass clippings on a mower, or simply humid air sealed in on a warm day.

Ventilation first

Airflow is the single most effective fix. Standard containers have small vents, which help but are rarely enough for a unit that stays shut for weeks. Additional louvred vents fitted high on one end and low on the other create cross-flow, so warm moist air leaves instead of sitting against the roof. On a unit that holds anything sensitive, this is worth doing at the start rather than after the first wet winter.

Simply opening the doors on a dry, breezy day once a fortnight makes a noticeable difference too. Do not do it on a muggy day - you are letting damp air in.

Keep moisture out in the first place

  • Store items dry. Nothing wet, damp or freshly washed goes in and gets shut away.
  • Cardboard and untreated timber act as sponges. Use plastic crates where you can, and keep boxes off the floor on pallets or shelving.
  • Clean grass, soil and snow off mowers and tools before they go in.
  • Do not store fuel cans, wet waterproofs or bagged compost alongside anything you need to keep dry.
  • Leave gaps between stacked items and the walls so air can move round the load.

Ground and airflow underneath

A container sitting directly on damp soil draws moisture up through the floor. Setting it on supports at the corners keeps the underside ventilated and the floor warmer, which reduces condensation inside. That is covered in preparing the ground, and it is the reason we always recommend slabs or sleepers rather than bare earth.

Insulation, coatings and desiccants

Insulation

Insulating the inside of the roof and walls stops the steel surface being the coldest thing in the box, which is the proper fix for a unit in daily use. Closed-cell spray foam or rigid board with taped joints both work; the important part is not leaving cold bridges or trapped air gaps where moist air can reach the steel behind the insulation. A high cube gives you the head height to do this without losing usable space.

Anti-condensation coatings

A sprayed anti-condensation coating on the roof holds moisture in a thin absorbent layer and releases it as the air warms, rather than letting it drip. It is cheaper than insulation and well suited to storage units that do not need to be habitable.

Desiccants

Hanging dehumidifier sachets and tubs are a useful supplement in a small unit or for boxed stock, but they are not a solution on their own - they saturate and need replacing. Use them alongside ventilation, not instead of it.

How to tell condensation from a leak

  • Condensation appears across the whole roof and walls, evenly, usually overnight.
  • A leak makes a repeatable mark in one place, worst during and after rain.
  • Check the door seals and the roof panels in daylight with the doors shut - genuine holes show as pinpricks of light.
  • Rust streaks running from one point suggest a real defect; general damp does not.

Sensible defaults

  1. Set the container on supports, off the ground, with water draining away.
  2. Fit extra vents high and low at opposite ends.
  3. Store dry items only, off the floor, with gaps for airflow.
  4. Add a roof coating for general storage, or insulate if the unit is in daily use.
  5. Air it out on dry, breezy days.
