Common uses

What people use this size for

A few of the jobs this container handles well.

Pallet and bulk storage

Around twenty standard UK pallets on the floor, which makes it the cheapest way to buy covered storage per square foot.

Plant and machinery

Long enough for vehicles, trailers, scaffold and long lengths of steel or timber that simply won't go in a 20ft.

Workshops and conversions

High cube 40ft units are the usual starting point for larger offices, gyms, split units and insulated workshops.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

Roughly 2,370 cubic feet, or about twenty standard UK pallets on the floor. A 40ft high cube gives around 2,690 cubic feet thanks to the extra foot of height.

Per square foot, yes - one 40ft is normally cheaper than two 20ft units and only needs one delivery. Two 20ft units are the better choice when access is tight or you need storage in two places.

A high cube is one foot taller than a standard container, roughly 9ft 6in external height. It is the most popular 40ft specification because of the extra headroom for racking and conversions.

A 40ft comes in on a HIAB crane lorry, so we look for around 100ft of straight, firm ground, room to turn, and no low cables or branches overhead for the crane. Send us a photo or a what3words location and we'll check before booking.

Firm and level at the four corner points - concrete, tarmac, slabs or well compacted hardcore. On soft ground, railway sleepers or concrete pads under the corners work well.

It moves with the shipping market, so we quote live. The delivered price always includes haulage to your postcode, with nothing added afterwards.

Usually not for temporary storage on private land, though a 40ft unit is more visible so it is worth a call to your local planning department if it is staying long term.

Yes. We can arrange partitions, personnel doors, windows, insulation, electrics, racking and full office or workshop conversions before delivery.

Same corten steel and lock box as the smaller sizes. Additional locking bars, alarms and lighting can be fitted at the depot.

Usually within a few working days if it is in stock at Darlington. Specific specifications coming from the shipping line take longer and we'll be upfront about the lead time.

Of course. Our depot off the A66 near Darlington is open Monday to Friday, 8am - 4pm. Ring ahead and we'll have a 40ft open and ready for you.
